ILA Local 1 Trustee and Shop Steward Pleads Guilty to Theft and Must Re-Pay More Than $96,000 in Restitution to Waterfront Employer

William A. Vitale, a shop steward at Maher Terminals and a trustee of ILA Local 1, pleaded guilty to Theft by Deception in the Third Degree in Union County Superior Court on April 28, 2011. Vitale admitted that he lied and caused false time records to be created which resulted in Maher Terminals paying him for hours that he did not work. He agreed to repay Maher Terminals $96,582.75, to resign his union position and surrender his Waterfront Commission registration with prejudice. Vitale is scheduled to be sentenced in September.
The case was investigated by the Waterfront Commission and prosecuted by the New Jersey Attorney General's Division of Criminal Justice.
