Governor Corzine Appoints Former Criminal Prosecutor and SCI Commissioner to the Waterfront and Airport Commission of New York & New Jersey
TRENTON - Governor Jon S. Corzine today appointed Barry H. Evenchick to the Waterfront and Airport Commission of New York and New Jersey. The Legislature established the Waterfront Commission for the purpose of regulating waterfront labor and the handling of waterborne freight within the port district. Formal nomination to this commission requires advice and consent of the New Jersey Senate and can only be made while the Senate is in session.
"As a former prosecutor and a well respected lawyer in the legal community, I am confident that Barry is the right person that will help restore the public's trust and clean up a commission that has been tainted with fraud and abuse," Governor Corzine said.
"I am honored by and grateful for the appointment by Governor Corzine as the New Jersey Waterfront commissioner," Evenchick said. "I pledge to utilize my experience in law enforcement and as an attorney to further the objectives of the Waterfront Commission and the best interests of the citizens of the State of New Jersey."
Mr. Evenchick served as chief of the appellate section of the Essex County Prosecutor's Office from 1965 to 1968. He also served as deputy attorney general and chief of the appellate section of the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice from 1970 to 1972 and has served as a member of the Supreme Court Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure.
He served as a member of the New Jersey State Commission of Investigation from 1987 to 1993, served as counsel for the National Advisory Committee on Criminal Justice, Standards and Goals, and in 2007, was appointed by the Supreme Court of New Jersey to the Advisory Committee on Extrajudicial Activities. He is a member of the New Jersey State, Federal and American Bar Associations and is currently a member in the law firm Walder, Hayden & Brogan.
Mr. Evenchick graduated from Rutgers University and Rutgers University School of Law.
The recess appointment of Mr. Evenchick is to replace Mr. Madonna, who was first appointed to the commission in December 2001 by Governor DiFrancesco.
