Former Police Officer and Organized Crime Associate Arrested for Extortion

Stefano Mazzola, a former Passaic police officer and organized crime associate, was arrested this morning. Mazzola, 68, of Rockaway, NJ was charged in a one count complaint with using extortion to collect or attempt to collect a debt and to punish a person for non-repayment of a debt. Mazzola appeared this afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge Madeline Cox Arleo and was detained.
The charge of extortionate collection of a debt is punishable by a maximum potential penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000. United States Attorney Paul Fishman credited the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Waterfront Commission for the investigation that led to today’s charge. The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey is prosecuting the matter.
