Port Elizabeth Longshoreman Suspended After Arrest for Unlawful Possession of a Handgun

July 12, 2021

Today, the Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor temporarily suspended the registration of longshoreman Daniel Asiedu, 49, of Orange, New Jersey, pending an administrative hearing. Asiedu has been a longshoreman since 2014.

The suspension was the result of Asiedu’s arrest on June 28, 2021, at 4:27 am in Newark, New Jersey, for Unlawful Possession of Weapon – Handgun (a crime of the second degree). Police had responded to a report of a shooting in progress and found that Asiedu had knowingly and unlawfully possessed a loaded Glock 19 9mm handgun without having a carrying permit.

Asiedu is barred from longshore work pending his administrative hearing at the Waterfront Commission. The hearing will address whether his alleged unlawful possession of a handgun renders his presence at the piers or other waterfront terminals in the Port of New York district a danger to the public peace or safety and whether his registration as a longshoreman should be revoked or continue to be suspended.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is handling his criminal case.
